Mobile Diagnostics

Mobile diagnostics support hospice patients through innovative in‑reach service
The Confederation is proud to be working with partners across the local health and care system to improve access to timely, high‑quality diagnostics for residents who need care in community settings.
One recent development is the extension of the mobile X‑ray service into the local hospice, enabling patients to receive hospital‑grade imaging without the disruption of travelling to A&E. Delivered in partnership with HomeMed, this service brings diagnostics directly to the bedside and is also available to care homes and patients in their own homes.
For hospice patients, avoiding an emergency department visit is particularly important. Transfers can be distressing, uncomfortable and can delay clinical decision‑making. By contrast, the mobile service provides rapid access to imaging, with teams typically arriving within hours of referral and consultant radiologist reports returned within one to two hours.
This swift turnaround allows hospice clinicians to make timely, informed decisions and hold the right conversations with patients and families about treatment options.
The qualitative benefits are equally significant. Patients remain in familiar surroundings, reducing anxiety and confusion. Families experience less stress and disruption. Hospice staff avoid the logistical challenges of arranging transport and escorts, allowing them to focus on delivering compassionate, person‑centred care.
This partnership demonstrates the value of system‑wide collaboration and the impact of bringing diagnostics closer to home for those who need it most.
