What is a chaperone?

  • A chaperone is a trained member of staff who:
  • Acts as a witness during an examination or procedure.
  • Supports your comfort and dignity.
  • Helps ensure professional standards are maintained.
 

When can I ask for a chaperone?

  • For intimate examinations (for example, breast, genital, or rectal examinations).
  • For any examination or consultation, even if it is not intimate
 

Who can be a chaperone?

  • A trained clinical or non-clinical member of staff.
  • Family members or friends are not usually suitable as formal chaperones, but may attend at your request (this will be discussed with you)
 

Our commitment to you

  • We follow NHS guidance on the use of chaperones.
  • All chaperones are appropriately trained and have a DBS check in place.
  • Your preference and decision will be respected and documented in your medical record.
