24-hour Blood Pressure Monitoring

What is Blood Pressure Monitoring?
Blood Pressure Monitoring is when your blood pressure is measured by you wearing a small device as you move around, living your normal daily life.
It is measured regularly for 24 hours which will allow the GP or nurse to get a clear idea of how your blood pressure changes throughout the day.
Who is this for?
To see if you have high blood pressure (sometimes called hypertension) and if medication is required to help with this. You might also be asked to wear a monitor if you are already on medication to see if this is working or needs changing.
What Will Happen?
The nurse will put a cuff on your upper arm and then an electronic monitor will take your blood pressure, the machine will take your blood pressure throughout the day (normally every 15 to 30 minutes) and then also during the night (normally every 30 to 60 minutes).
The monitor will be placed inside a protective cover, and it is important that you leave it inside the cover. At night, many people put the machine under their pillow or on the bed while they sleep. Your doctor or nurse will tell you how long you need to wear the monitor for and at the end you can remove the machine and cuff and give it back to us. The machine will have stored all your readings, and these will then be reviewed.
